Frustrated-Boy

There are times when parenting a child with special needs might become frustrating, or overwhelming. With everything that you have to deal with in the course of your daily life, finding appropriate education should not be heaped on the pile. Special education services through your local school system might not offer enough assistance to your child, which means you will have to seek support from outside your child’s school.

A child with emotional behavior disability (EBD) can struggle with overcoming certain educational blocks; this is where supplemental learning through special education tutoring might come into play. If you’re not quite sure what this specialized service is, that is perfectly okay; most people who are first beginning their journey into special education will be a little unclear on what this entails.

To start, a tutor is defined as “a private teacher, typically one who teaches a single student or a very small group.” This simply means that special education tutoring will be providing your child one-on-one attention either in-school or after the end of the school day, working on the educational tasks that your child struggles with when in their regular classroom setting. This allows your child to learn in a safe, comfortable environment free from distraction and the general school population.

Special Education Tutoring

Special education tutoring relies heavily on technology as an assistive aid to educational progress, something that has really blossomed over the last decade into a massive global network of students and educators. Before this technological revolution, special education tutoring services were secured through qualified tutors by your child’s special education teachers or other school resources, your child’s specialists or simple word of mouth. Now you can connect to tutors all around the country – or the world! – with just a few clicks of the mouse and some simple tools, like a webcam.

Supplemental learning through special education tutoring has increased drastically over the past decade as well. Designed primarily to take the curriculum your child is currently learning in the traditional classroom and mold it to fit their specific needs, supplemental learning is a great option to explore. Many children with special needs require more one-on-one assistance than what can be offered in most classroom settings today. A special education tutor can keep your child from feeling overwhelmed and frustrated with their current coursework and thus not only helping academically, but also decreasing behaviors.

Special education tutoring is now available online. This technological breakthrough allows children to be taught from someone outside of the school system that is knowledgeable in emotional behavior disability (EBD). This is extremely useful if you live in a small area or do not have access to quality special education tutoring services.

Defining Emotional Behavioral Disability (EBD)

An emotional behavioral disability is an emotional disability characterized by displaying one of more of the following symptoms:

  • An inability to build or maintain satisfactory interpersonal relationships with peers and/or teachers. For preschool-age children, this would include other care providers.
  • An inability to learn which cannot be adequately explained by intellectual, sensory or health factors.
  • Consistent or chronic inappropriate type of behavior or feelings under normal conditions.
  • Displayed pervasive mood of unhappiness or depression.
  • Displayed tendency to develop physical symptoms, pains or unreasonable fears associated with personal or school problems.

The symptoms of Emotional Behavior Disability (EBD) must be shown to be consistent enough in their nature in duration, intensity frequency and to such a degree that a basic education is affected, requiring special education services.

There are several other symptoms of emotional behavior disability, but the most common symptoms are:

  • Inattentive, easily distracted
  • Poor concentration
  • Resistance to change and transitions in routines
  • Demonstrates aggressive behavior
  • Intimidates and bullies other students
  • Regularly absent from school
  • Low self esteem
  • Difficulty working in groups
  • Often manipulative of situations

These obstacles can lead to frustration for both the child and educator, not to mention the parents. This can lead to increased roadblocks on educational path to success, and in many cases is what special education tutoring has shown to actually decrease in your child.

How To Educate A Child With EBD

Much like snowflakes, no two children learn alike, and children with emotional and behavioral disabilities can push the boundaries of what’s acceptable in the school environment. While there is no one specific way to tutor a child with EBD or other special needs, there are steps you can take to help minimize the behaviors, which leads to a child’s increased ability to academically achieve the best performance possible.

Here are some general guidelines to keep handy regarding special education for a child with EBD:

  1. Identify the cause of the behavior. It might be that the child becomes loud or disruptive when confronted with a sudden change in the daily routine. To get the best educational results, take note of any behavioral patterns and their cause and work on finding a solution.
  2. Work on changing the disruptive behavior. It’s tempting to slip into frustration and lose your temper when working with a child who has special needs, but anger only validates the behavior. Work on rewarding proper behavior while ignoring the bad; this lets the child with special needs know that only good actions get attention.
  3. Seek special education tutoring services. If your child is consistently displaying negative emotions or behavior while in a traditional school setting, it might be time to look into special education tutoring as a way to keep them on par with the school’s curriculum. Every child deserves a fair chance at a great education, but there might be a little something extra that’s missing from the overall big picture.
Supplemental Learning Through Special Education Tutoring

Special Education Resource was created specifically for children with special needs and their parents. Our founder, Suzie Dalien realized quickly there was massive gap in available services and assistance for children with special needs outside of the classroom. A handful of companies offered special education tutoring, but only as a supplement to their primary traditional tutoring services. Special Education Resource is dedicated solely to assisting children with special needs reach their academic and behavioral excellence. We offer one-on-one tutoring sessions that are tailored to your child’s unique situation and special needs, working with them instead of against. This means your child will have the chance to learn at their own pace, in their own way, without the interference of a curriculum weighing down on their shoulders.

We all need a little bit of help from time-to-time; this is especially true for those who require special education tutoring services. Special Education Resource provides a caring environment in which your child can learn, leading to a better understanding of the coursework and increased behavioral performance. If a child cannot learn in the way they are taught, it is our responsibility to educate them in a manner that makes sense for them. Special education tutoring can help your child succeed, no matter what might be holding them back.

The first step in determining whether or not it makes sense to enroll your child in special education tutoring, is a free consultation. A special education tutor will be able to answer your questions, offer guidance and help create a plan to ensure your child’s success. Together, we can implement change and ensure the success of your child along with thousands of other children with special needs throughout the United States.
